Grammar

To express a negative in French, to say I don't know, it's not here etc, you use the words ne ... pas placed around the verb.

il aime la glace   he likes ice cream
il n'aime pas la glace   he doesn't like ice cream

If the verb is in the past tense the ne ... pas is used as follows :

je l'ai vu   I saw him
je ne l'ai pas vu   I didn't see him

The following negatives work in the same way as ne ... pas :

ne ... jamais   never
ne ... plus   no more
ne ... rien   nothing
